I was at work when a delivery arrived. It was from the bakery where my husband, Jake, worked.<\/p>\n
Excited, I said, \u201cGuys, my husband sent a cake, join me!\u201d wanting to share it with everyone. But dear God\u2026 as I opened the box, my coworkers went DEAD SILENT.<\/p>\n
The cake read, \u201cI\u2019M DIVORCING YOU.\u201d Right next to it was a positive pregnancy test.<\/p>\n
FYI: MY HUSBAND CAN\u2019T HAVE KIDS! Gosh, I was so embarrassed as everyone awkwardly walked away. I just stared at the test and the cake\u2014completely frozen, destroyed.<\/p>\n
I rushed home immediately. Jake was pacing the floor, SEETHING.
\nHim: \u201cTELL ME THE TEST ISN\u2019T YOURS!\u201d
\nMe: \u201cIt is. Look, you have every right to leave, but there\u2019s something you need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake\u2019s face twisted in fury.<\/p>\n
He threw his hands up. \u201cWhat else is there to know, Rachel? You\u2019re pregnant, and I CAN\u2019T have kids! So, unless this is some miraculous conception\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I held up a hand, my own anger rising.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t have kids?\u201d I repeated, voice sharp.<\/p>\n
Jake scoffed. \u201cDamn right! The doctors told me years ago\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I cut him off. \u201cJake. You never got tested.\u201d<\/p>\n
That stopped him cold.<\/p>\n
His mouth opened. Closed.<\/p>\n
I stepped forward. \u201cYou always just assumed you were infertile because of that old sports injury, but you NEVER ACTUALLY got tested.\u201d<\/p>\n
He blinked rapidly. \u201cT-That\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I pulled out my phone, opened my messages, and shoved the screen in his face. A text from his doctor.<\/p>\n
\u201cJake\u2019s fertility results: No issues detected. Everything is normal.\u201d<\/p>\n
His jaw dropped.<\/p>\n
I pressed on. \u201cI made you take a test last month\u2014just to be sure. You\u2019re perfectly capable of having kids, Jake.\u201d<\/p>\n
His hands shook. \u201cWait\u2026 you mean\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded slowly. \u201cThis baby? IS YOURS.\u201d<\/p>\n
The realization hit him like a freight train.<\/p>\n
His rage drained away, replaced by sheer horror.<\/p>\n
He glanced at the cake\u2014his cruel, humiliating cake.<\/p>\n
Then back at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cRachel, I\u2014\u201d He staggered forward. \u201cOh my God. I messed up. I messed up so bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
I folded my arms. \u201cNo kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n
He reached for my hands, desperate. \u201cI thought\u2014God, I thought you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I pulled away.<\/p>\n
