Adam\u2019s a pediatrician, and I\u2019m a waitress putting myself through college. He\u2019s always been a little dismissive about my job, but this took the cake.<\/p>\n
One evening, we were at his place when the doorbell rang. \u201cOh, those are my colleagues,\u201d he said, smirking. \u201cListen, Rachel, just hang out in the kitchen for a bit.<\/p>\n
Maybe cook dinner for us or clean up? I don\u2019t want you to feel out of place with these guys\u2014they\u2019re all doctors, and the conversation might be\u2026 TOO COMPLEX for you.\u201d
\nI froze.\u201dAre you serious?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t make a big deal out of it,\u201d he replied and went to greet his colleagues.
\nFine. He wanted me in the kitchen? I\u2019d stay there \u2014 but not how he expected.<\/p>\n
I smiled sweetly and turned on my heel, heading straight to the kitchen.<\/p>\n
Oh, Adam. You have no idea who you\u2019re messing with.<\/p>\n
He wanted me to stay in my place?<\/p>\n
Fine.<\/p>\n
I got to work.<\/p>\n
The Petty, Perfect Plan
\nWhile Adam entertained his fancy doctor friends in the living room, I made one hell of a meal.<\/p>\n
Lobster risotto
\nPerfectly seared steaks
\nA decadent chocolate souffl\u00e9
\nI plated everything like a five-star chef. Gorgeous, aromatic, mouthwatering.<\/p>\n
Then?<\/p>\n
I sat my happy little self at the kitchen island and ate ALONE.<\/p>\n
Not just small bites. Oh no.<\/p>\n
I took loud, exaggerated bites, moaning like I was having a five-star Michelin experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cMmm! This is AMAZING. Best meal I\u2019ve ever had! Wow, Rachel, you\u2019re so talented!\u201d I said dramatically to myself.<\/p>\n
The scent of perfectly cooked steak and butter filled the air.<\/p>\n
It only took five minutes before I heard footsteps.<\/p>\n
One of his colleagues peeked in. \u201cUh\u2026 wow. That smells incredible. What\u2019s going on in here?\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, just enjoying a meal I made. Adam thought I should stay in the kitchen, so I did!\u201d I took another deliberate, exaggerated bite. \u201cDid you guys want some?\u201d<\/p>\n
His colleague frowned. \u201cWait, he told you to stay in here?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, yes,\u201d I said cheerfully. \u201cApparently, doctor conversations are too complex for my little waitress brain.\u201d<\/p>\n
The guy\u2019s eyebrows shot up. \u201cWow. That\u2019s\u2026 not cool.\u201d<\/p>\n
More of Adam\u2019s colleagues wandered in, curious about the food. And one by one, they started sitting down.<\/p>\n
Eating.<\/p>\n
Talking.<\/p>\n
Laughing with me.<\/p>\n
Within fifteen minutes, Adam was the only one left in the living room.<\/p>\n
When he finally came in, his jaw dropped.<\/p>\n
His friends were all in my kitchen, complimenting my cooking, laughing with me.<\/p>\n
I gave him the sweetest, pettiest smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, hey, babe! We were just chatting. It turns out, doctors can have conversations with waitresses after all.\u201d<\/p>\n
His face turned beet red.<\/p>\n
His boss looked at him, unimpressed. \u201cAdam, you told your fianc\u00e9e to stay in the kitchen? Seriously?\u201d<\/p>\n
Another doctor snorted. \u201cMan, I\u2019d marry her for this steak alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Laughter erupted.<\/p>\n
Adam was humiliated.<\/p>\n
And me?<\/p>\n
I just took another deliberate, smug bite.<\/p>\n
